Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about testing and optimizing your WordPress site for mainland China.
General
How does the Speed in China API work?
The Speed in China API uses
the Globalping network (api.globalping.io) to run speed tests from servers located in
mainland China. Results include DNS, TCP, TLS, TTFB, and total load time from multiple
server locations.
Where are the test servers located?
We facilitate testing with
servers located across mainland China via the Globalping network. Common test locations
include Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and
Shenzhen, though exact cities may vary based on server availability.
This gives you a representative sample of speed from major population centers across
mainland China.
Why do I need to test my site speed in China?
Standard speed test tools
(GTmetrix, PageSpeed Insights, Pingdom) test from servers in the US and Europe. They
cannot detect the massive slowdowns caused by the Great Firewall. Resources like Google
Fonts, Google Analytics, reCAPTCHA, and YouTube embeds are blocked or severely throttled
in China, potentially adding 30+ seconds to your page load time. Testing from inside
China is the only way to see what Chinese visitors actually experience.
Does my website need to be hosted in China?
No. Your website can be hosted
anywhere in the world. As long as you optimize it to avoid calling third-party services
blocked by the Chinese firewall, your site can load quickly for mainland China visitors.
Using a CDN with Chinese edge servers can also help significantly.
Features
What does Google Font Localization do?
Google Fonts (
fonts.googleapis.com) are completely
blocked by the Great Firewall. Our localization feature automatically detects all Google
Font stylesheet requests on your site, downloads the CSS and WOFF2 font files, and
serves them directly from your WordPress server. This eliminates blocked requests and
can improve load times by 10-30+ seconds for Chinese visitors. What is Resource Analysis?
Resource Analysis scans your
pages for external scripts, stylesheets, fonts, and other assets loaded from domains
known to be blocked or throttled in China. It identifies problematic resources like
Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Facebook Pixel, YouTube embeds, and more, then
provides recommendations on how to resolve each one.
How does scheduled monitoring work?
With a PRO or Agency plan, you
can schedule automatic speed tests on a recurring basis: monthly, weekly, daily, or
hourly. Tests run automatically via WordPress cron, and results are logged in your Speed
Test History so you can track performance trends over time.
